As we get ready to close out the old year, it is my prayer that the body of Christ step into a fresh new experience with our living Savior. For many, 2013 has been a year full of heartache and disappointments, and I personally believe that some have contemplated walking away from the household of God. Please, don’t misunderstand me, I’m not speaking of walking away from God, but rather His house. I for one am sick and tired of the church simply going through the motions but not seeing a lot of fruit. Jesus made so many powerful promises for His Bride, yet we see so little of His power. I ask myself why this is, and I have come to the conclusion that there is way too much religion and flesh operating in God’s house, and not enough of the Holy Ghost.
For years the church has been out of balance. She has been operating in two attributes that has kept her from stepping into the newness of God’s power. I would like to simply share my heart with you, and I realize that some of you will not agree with me—and that’s okay—really.
The first attribute is religion. The scribes and Pharisees knew how to walk in religious ways according to man, real well. However, Jesus rebuked them rather harshly.
Matthew 23:25-27—Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. 26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also. 27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness.
I personally believe that the spirit of religion has chased more people from God’s house than any other spirit. To be frank with you—the reader—I absolutely despise religion, and obviously so did Jesus.
The second attribute is emotionalism. I believe that there are many so called spiritual things going on in the house of God that is based on emotion. We must remember that God will never operate outside of His Holy Word (Bible). I have been to conferences where one person after another had a (so called) prophetic word to speak over me. When I was a babe in Christ my flesh would cling to every word that was spoken over me, but once my relationship with Christ began to grow I was able to discern that not everybody who claims to be speaking from God is really of God. Paul warned the church about being deceived.
Eph 4:14— That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
But rather we are to:
Eph 4:15— But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
When God’s anointed men and women speak the truth in love it will not always gratify the flesh. But rather, it will cause the flesh to surrender over to the will of the Father so that we will mature in Christ, who is the head of the church.
It is my prayer that as we enter into 2014 we forget all of the old things that brought forth very little fruit, and allow God to do the new thing that He desires to do in His church.
Isa 43:18-19–18 Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
In closing, everything about God is love, and He desires that we have an intimate relationship with Him. He is the Potter and we are the clay, and He will fashion us according to His liking.
Happy New Year,
Pastor Melinda Abersold
